The University of Warsaw Herbarium (Index Herbariorum acronym: WA) was established in 1816, after Michał Szubert returned from Paris with the initial 7,000 specimens. Today, our collection comprises approximately 750,000 herbarium sheets, alongside valuable items at the intersection of nature, history, and art, such as botanical watercolors of plants and fungi, florilegia, and unique educational charts.

We are part of the Faculty of Biology and the Biological and Chemical Research Centre of the University of Warsaw. Our activities focus on research in plant taxonomy, anatomy, and morphology, as well as academic teaching. Furthermore, through our BioPermits unit, we support the academic community regarding legal regulations for the acquisition and use of biological resources (including the Nagoya Protocol, CITES, and EU regulations).

The University of Warsaw Herbarium is cared for by Dr Maja Graniszewska, Prof. Barbara Sudnik-Wójcikowska, and Dr Kamil E. Frankiewicz.
